Lost your bottle?

A town in eastern Australia is banning the sale of bottled water.  There is some controversy over this move and the primary issues appear to be decreasing the bottle waste (lots of people pushing for refundable bottle deposits Australia-wide, like SA has) versus minimising the availability of water alongside sugary drinks in shops.

I thought it sounded a bit off kilter, until I read that there are drinking fountains in the town and people will be encouraged to fill recyclable bottles at them. How is that different from people who already reuse bottles and fill them with tap water? Sounds ok to me!

I do a bit of both - I'll buy a bottle of water if I'm out and need something to drink unexpectely. This meets my needs as I can't have juice or cordial in thirst-quenching quantities because of the sugar ( ... )

I don't buy sugary drinks either. Lots of diet drinks come in bottles!

Hadn't realised the civic water isn't great; London water has come out as better than many mineral waters in tests (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1572840/Tap-water-beats-bottles-in-taste-test.html) - guess we have it lucky!

The idea of drinking rainwater, on the other hand, would only be for if I was desparate (and then I'd want to make sure there was nothing hatching in it).
