From FB: Zombies and Bad Ends.

I recently read an article on io9, which discussed a few movies whose endings were changed for the worst. Two of the movies had sort of downer endings, and I thought about this some, and wondered what kind of movie I could make which had a real gut-wrenching ending, but would still be a good movie - and whether or not it would sell.

Personally, "all the main characters die" is on my list of things I don't like in a movie. That alone, however, is usually not a make-or-break detail. I can think of at least one movie in recent years that I watched and liked a lot in spite of everyone dying (though the last couple deaths might technically have been off-screen, it was very much assured). But it is "in spite of" rather than "because of."

Changes to things like I am Legend bother me a lot because 1) I was aware of the original story ending and 2) the movie version basically totally missed the point of the story, turning it into effectively just another "zombie" flick.
