Death of Music Games

Dance Dance Revolution is almost toast - one game did come out for the PS3 though.  Guitar Hero is going the way of the dodo, and I'm imagining Rock Band is going to be joining them soon enough.  My question is -- why?  My answer, I think, is because of the glut associated with these games.  Do we really need four Guitar Heroes over the space of ( Read more... )

LBP... October 2008. Two and a half years?

But in addition to the quantity of new music games, there's probably some amount of peripheral fatigue. Not only do you "have" to buy the new game, but now we have drums! And microphones! And more realistic guitars! I can't speak for everyone, but that's hard to keep up with. Meanwhile the novelty of motion as a part of the game is wearing off and is being included in other controllers.

Basically, I think there are a lot of factors into the fading fad.

So far, I don't know if Rock Band is toast or not. But Guitar Hero is.

It was probably a bad sign when people started parodying them. Like the 'Orchestra Hero' tee shirts.

Rhythm games as a whole are a tiny, niche market. Guitar Hero pumped out several sequels before competition one-upped them into a full band simulator. GH attempted to follow suit and even added features no one asked for, but the damage was done. Licensing and song lists brought the gamers to both camps, but more preferred Rock Band's way of doing things and now GH is closing the doors. Will RB and DDR? Probably by next year we won't see anything new for RB. However with the success of the Playstation Move and the Xbox Kinect, I'm sure a new DDR-style game (Para Para anyone?) will make its way on to the market.
