it was a bit of effort, but not really a technical climb. From the drop off point, it is just a 2 hour walk / scramble, but you ascend some 600m from 2800m alt to 3400m+.
you referring to the climb from aguas caliente ? macchu picchu was a 50 min steep climb. this is more gradual... and i was sprinting up macchu picchu to catch the sunrise. views wise, cant really compare as they're both different. this one is serene, while the macchu picchu one is breath taking, esp if you ascended to the huayna picchu.
if you are referring to the Inca Trail (4 days) / Salkantay Trail (5 days), those were defintely killing. with the much higher altitude and tougher terrain. Tatsang is a nicely worn dirt track and steps most of the way.
when you stand at the edge of the monastery, it is apparently a 400m straight drop to the rocks below.... they first built it in the 9th century or something. there were several fires - some parts of the building were recently rebuilt.
