Nifty! That could easily be changed to crochet. Just make granny squares instead. I might try that just for the heck of it.

They seem so simple to make that I'm definitely going to give them a try. I have around four large shoulder bags crammed full of yarn, most of it unlabelled (obtained through freecycling, etc.) and with lots of small balls of it that I couldn't use to make something really large.

I'm currently trudging through a variation on these right now (minus the pompoms):

They look just like the slippers my grandmother made her entire life and that Mom tried to show me how to knit a few months ago. They're also fairly quick to make, except that I keep forgetting where to carry over my strands when I change colours. I wish the pattern had illustrations.

I have a ton of yarn, too. I used to hoard it. I would find a neat color or texture and I would buy several skeins of it.

My grandmother used to make those pompom slippers for us when I was growing up. She would use a real sturdy yarn because we would wear them and wear them and wear them. But she always the pompom on - something I think my brother would've been happier without!

The type of yarn used makes so much difference. I've had some of my grandmother's slippers for years and they've stayed nice, yet my godmother gave me a couple of pairs she'd made a few months back and they've already worn through (I've been using them as slippers for guests since we have cold hardwood floors).
