"Nick Fury makes me stupid. Do you take credit cards?"

Mar 16, 2010 01:27

First, a disclaimer: I haven't forgotten about Supernatural, I swear. When the season finally picks up again later this month, there will be squee and flail and dumb icon posts with dorky angels in them. I promise.

So, I'm back from Emerald City Comic Con. Guess who just spent a ridiculous amount of cash on comic books?

In which I babble about the con. )

captain zombie!, fuck yeah nick fury, tv: chuck, hellboy, it's convention time!, tv: supernatural, make mine marvel

I am so jealous! That sounds like awesome fun times. And I'm totally impressed you knocked Dave Stewart down to $60. WANT. Good to know that fangirlish enthusiasm will get you places!

I am giggling over the Captain Savage review. It doesn't make me want to read it, really, but I do enjoy reading about you reading it. :D

It was a total accident. After some hemming and hawing, I'd agreed to $80, the initial discount he'd offered me, but afterwards he pushed an extra $20 back into my hands with the instruction I buy some original art as well. I did. ILU, Nick~

And, oh man, Captain Savage. For all of its (hilarious, hilarious) flaws, it'll probably improve some after it's had a couple of issues to find its feet. Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos is, on its face, pretty ridiculous as well, but Silver Age Marvel had a talent for taking dumb cliches and silly stereotypes and turning them, after a fashion, into compelling stories.

Well, okay, "compelling stories" here having the meaning of "compelling and often totally ridiculous Indiana Jones-esque pulpy action-adventure stories", but I like what I like. ;)

That isn't to say I'd recommend it to, um, anyone. The Sarge, on the other hand... Now there's fun times. ♥

Dave Stewart is amazing, trufax. *_*

To be honest, I feel a little bad for Quesada. The amount of flack he gets, and given how long ago BND was at this point, is kind of amazing. But then, I never had an emotional investment in Spiderman.

Also hilarious: the first issue misspells his name as "LaRocke" for an entire page.

omg, lulz. That's amazing. Not only because of the horribly stereotyped character, but also because they misspelled his name.

Bigger LULZ at Seamen. ROFL. Also, what the hell is a bumbershoot? It doesn't sound, uh, pleasant.

That sounds like a mighty fine book you've got there, m'dear. :D I'd say that's worth the trip alone, hah!

The ridiculous book aside, it sounds like you had so much fun! That's so awesome you got a print of Ben Daimio from Dave Stewart!

I really need to read up on more comic stuff before I go to SDCC or else I'm going to be hopelessly lost when it comes to the dealers room.

Did you get searched by US or Canadian customs? Because US customs/security is redonkulous now. At least when flying. Adam got the full pat down when we were coming back into the US and I got my bags searched.

It was a more innocent time. ;)

"Bumbershoot" is an outdated word for an umbrella. For reasons known only to him, Percy Pinkerton (the token Brit on the team) carries one with him at all times.

...

Yeah.

I love the old, campy Silver Age stuff, I really do, but when I try to explain why people stare at me very, very strangely.

And there's a lot of other media stuff at SDCC, so you won't be totally lost. But if you're in (or open to learning about) a few comic book titles, it helps. ♥

That's the crazy part. We were stopped and searched by Canadians. So weird.
