There wasn't a specific event that triggered the post, really. I've just taken a notice to more and more instances of heinous behavior on the internet, and I always have this reaction of "You wouldn't dare say those things if people could see your face. And that should tell you something about what you're saying." That kind of 'karmic stain' idea was just a solution that was rolling around my head. It all stems from my philosophy that people should be responsible for the things they say and do, and that the first amendment does not protect one from social repercussions. Basically, you can think and say whatever you want, but that comes with the responsibility that others have the same right to argue/correct/chastise you for saying those things. The internet is a convenient way to shirk that responsibility- thus it has become a breeding ground for hate mongering.
So troo. And the anonymity and intensity of all the obscene content aside from just what people say is also staggeringly sad. That said, I have SERIOUS prayers and mad love for kids that have to grow up around it all as I consider myself BLESSED to have grown up when the internet's inner 15-year-old miscreant was still being birthed by Al Gore, not yet fully developed into the childhood-warping demon-incarnate it's darker sides conspire to be. However, that said, it's a beautiful survey of the ACTUAL ethical standing of the world's people...maybe it's going to take good people having to witness the true state of things in order to kickstart their inner goodly-service bug; maybe the opposite side of the anonymity problem is a mad dose of truth administered to all; wouldn't it betray the haters if their form of escape gave us the motivation to make real progress.
