What must have been going on in his mind! So many contradictions to the things he believed to be true! Nice illustration ot the thought of a very confused young Hammond!

There was no way he was going to believe that the Soviets would be gone in thirty years.

To have officers like that under his command, treating him with that kind of respect… if that was in his future, it was something to strive for.
