You've made me want to rewatch this episode and I don't have time :( It was a good episode although I didn't pay as much attention as I could have. Your review is awesome though and I love your excitement and happiness over this new season.
The whole set-up of Dean with an angel and Sam with a demon is interesting. It might be a little too religious for my tastes, but I want to see where it goes. It seems like a set up for some epic battle between good and evil, but who knows with this show. It keeps you on your toes (or it does if you don't read spoilers).
When I read this, V6R 1G3, my first thought was: that looks like a BC postal code. My brain wasn't quite translating that it was a license plate number.
"The whole set-up of Dean with an angel and Sam with a demon is interesting. It might be a little too religious for my tastes..."
I think it could be a dangerous way to go. When you write about religion, you run a serious risk of ticking off two groups of people: 1. Religious people. 2. Nonreligious people. Basically... everyone. It can be tricky if you're not super careful.
I think it's interesting but yes it could be a dangerous way to go. When things get too overtly religious is when the trouble arises. SPN has had muted religious tones, such as holy water being a weapon, but when the idea of "God" comes up it can be dangerous if you're not careful and adhere to whatever the religion's tenets are while not seeming like you're preaching to the audience that isn't of that religion or who are nonreligious.
For me, anything too overtly religious makes me uncomfortable. Religion makes me uncomfortable in general and it has really since I took a class in terrorism. There was a lot of history about religious terrorism in the class and religion is now rather uncomfortable to me. I prefer notions of "good" and "evil" without the notions of "God" and the "Devil" attached.
You're so right, Elly. It's kind of amazing how skillfully they've skirted the issue up until now. I've read rants online about how the boys shouldn't be using weapons to fight demons at all, but should do nothing more than invoke the name of God. Because that would make for such great television! :) Emotions always run high when the subject of religion is on the table.
It was a good season opener, for sure. I don't usually like AC/DC, but in this case, it worked. I enjoyed the whole episode.
"Dude, this is so Old Testament! Oh, and he's hot."
Hee! Strangely true. Is he really working for the Boss, do you think, or is he a fallen angel? I haven't been watching the show long enough to formulate a reasonable guess, but it seems to me he could turn out to be either.
Before this show I didn't like hard rock much at all, outside of Led Zeppelin, but now I enjoy a lot of the songs just for the association with this show. I love Back In Black and Highway To Hell now. :)
I don't trust what Castiel says for a minute, but I want it to be true just because Dean has suffered enough already, poor baby. OTOH, Kripke loves to torment both Dean and us, so all bets are off.
I love that you're watching this show! Do you think there's a Chlean fic in your future? ;) Check out this icon, by tehzo. The first time I saw it, I was all, *GASP* Sacrilege! :)
I'm so loving where this is going, but I'm scared, too. I foresee angst of epic proportions.
Dean's resurrection did remind me of Buffy, but there's only so many ways you can come back to life.
The thing that struck me as odd was Ruby saying she wouldn't come between the brothers. WTF? But I think she's learned how to manipulate Sam. And, oh, Sammy! Using that brain of yours a little too much and not listening to your heart enough is a bad thing. You know keeping secrets never ends well in Winchesterland, and yet, you continue. (This, of course, begs the question: Will Dean tell Sam and Bobby about meeting an angel and getting a mission from God?)
Ugh! So many thoughts!! I think I'll watch Houses of the Holy and then Lazarus Rising.
I didn't mean that I thought Dean's escape was a trite rip-off or anything like that, it just made me remember how painful that season of Buffy was, and it made me scared. It made me wonder if the imagery was purposefully evocative. And have I told you about my conspiracy theory? LOL!
But I think she's learned how to manipulate Sam.
Ooh, good point! I think you're absolutely right. As she herself likes to remind Dean, she is a demon. I like what you say about Sam's heart, too. *sighs* What is it with Sam, anyway? He's always been secretive. Is it about proving he can be independent? Is it about the way he thinks John liked Dean best? Or is it about knowing what he's doing is a very bad idea
( ... )
As frustrated as I get when the boys keep secrets, I can understand where it's coming from. It's not like John taught them to be open. And Sam's experienced a lot of conflict with his family when he goes and follows his own path, so who can blame him for wanting to avoid a fight? (Says the girl afraid of conflict.)
That makes perfect sense. You're so right that he has always faced resistance from both John and Dean when he wants to do his own thing. But Sammy! Not good!
Whimsy told me you made icons, but I wouldn't let myself look at them until I finished my review. I was on restriction, but now I'm free! :) I can't wait to check them out.
This episode was so incredible. This show just owns me.
The scene is made even funnier when you realize the offending song is Vision, by Jason Manns, one of Jensen's best friends. I didn't realize this, but that's hilarious!
I miss Katie Cassidy. She won me over last season, and it doesn't seem fair to just hand all that hard earned good will to a new actress I agree. I liked KC if only because she reminded me of Kristen Bell. What was the point of getting rid of her if the actual character is still around? Is she always going to look like that girl or she she going to change bodies all the time?
And then, a glorious shot of Dean's bare chest (and perky nipples!) Yes! I loved that shot and Dean's comment about his nipples. Please, Please, will someone make an icon that says that? ;-)
I loved the whole threesome comment where Pamela says something like "you're invited too" to Sam and Dean says, "you're so NOT invited!" or something like that. :-)
I liked the episode and I'm curious to see where this is all going.
I have Jason Manns' album, so I recognized the song right away. That was too funny!
The rumor is that they couldn't bring Katie back because of budget cuts, and had to go with a cheaper actress. I think it would have been a stretch anyway, though, because once Lilith left the body Ruby had been using, that person would have died. Even if she hadn't suffered fatal injury before we ever met her, Bobby shot her in Sin City.
Oh, you know that icon is out there somewhere, even as we speak! hee!
That whole sequence between the boys and Pamela was totally cute and funny. That was classic Kripke, to get us all laughing and loving this new character, and then WHAM! Hit us with the devastating horror of what happens to her next. Damn you, Kripke!
