Lie/Lay

Nov 23, 2010 11:54

The verb 'to lay' (as with the verb 'to put' or 'to place') needs an object to lay. The verb 'to lie' (as with 'to sit or 'to stand') does not.

Harry lies on the bed
Harry lay on the bed yesterday
Harry has lain on the bed
Harry is no longer lying on the bed.

Harry lays Draco on the bed
Harry laid Draco on the bed yesterday
Harry has laid Draco the bed

"Harry laid down anxiously..."

I'd be anxious too, if I were laying down. It sounds frightfully unhygienic.

God knows my grammar's probably a bit dodgy from time to time but some things are just cringe-inducing. Don;t even get my started on homophones. Pouring over documents; bearing one's soul...

Kings raining on the thrown, the cereal killers, the rampaging hoards and the throws of passion - the list is endless!

There are only so many times I can read about Harry laying - I keep expecting him to produce an egg :D

Good God, thank you so much for this! I've struggled with this one since fourth grade and no one ever explained it to my satisfaction before. *takes notes*

Glad to have been of help! I think we all have our own little blind spots over somethings - I always have trouble with affect vs effect myself.
