I have mixed feelings on the whole season. There were things I really liked, things I was "meh" about. But as far as your thoughts:
1. I get why Dean tried to protect Ben and Lisa. But I don't think he went about it the right way. Just because they don't remember demons and other things, doesn't remember that the supernatural world doesn't remember them. If anything that almost make Ben and Lisa more vulnerable, because they don't know what to do or who to call. Sadly, I think it is just a convenient way to the writers to move them along. Cas should have hidden them from the supernatural, too, but I don't remember that being mentioned
( ... )
1. I am still ambivalent about it all. Knowing about the Supernatural didn't really help Lisa and Ben, in the end. Dean might have prepared them, but in all honesty, did it make a difference? I think the stress and strain of knowing about the supernatural overwhelms the benefits of being aware. IMO :) But you are right, they'd still be targets.
5. Ah, Cas. It is a similar theme/idea but then the quest for power and security is an old one too. And is it not one of the downsides of freedom/self awareness losing it a little on the way, as you figure it out, realise that freedom requires responsibility and wisdom.
I did like though that Cas's descent into darkness was one paved with good intentions but questionable means. It made it all seem so reasonable, but foolish at the same time. Unlike Star Wars and Annakin's dramatic 180, Cas's path was steady and believable.
1. It was extremely sad that Dean felt that he had to erase Lisa and Ben’s memory. I don’t know if it was for the best or not, but he did it to spare them of some pretty bad memories.
2. I’ve always felt that Dean was too forgiving. After all Sam did to him in season four Dean forgave him fairly easily. He forgave Bobby for lying to him for a year. He would have forgiven Castiel if he would have stopped. He tried to talk Castiel out of his plan again when Castiel came to Bobby’s to steal the journals. What takes time to re-build for Dean is trust.
1. Sparing them the memory I think was the main idea, definitely. And sad is Dean's middle name, but I still think it was a good idea. If its possible, why not.
2. Oh yeah, Dean is way too forgiving of Sam (and others) and probably always will be. Trust is the issue, definitely. And when you don't listen to him, or go long with his plans, he's vbery stubborn about it.
In both Sam and Cas's cases where they thought they were doing the right thing, doing what was best, Dean proved to be right in the end, but he wasn't prepared to give a little and consider their side. How would things have turned out if Lilith hadn't been the last seal and Sam didn't open the cage? Would Dean still have forgiven Sam? Its an interesting little dynamic.
