Because, if SM was brilliant (which I like to think he is) then River knew (at that point) at least that Amy was her mother.

She knew at that point. In 6.13, when she visits Amy in her garden, she said, (paraphrase) "I just climbed out of the Byzantium. You were there. Had no idea who I was."

Ah! I had forgotten that. Thanks :)

However, I still wonder though if SM knew. Its easy to retrospectively write 6.13 and say, voila!. But as far back as 5.4 did Alex, Karen and SM know?

And likewise, in the Library with Ten and Donna, did Alex know? That... I think doubtful.

IDK, Moffat obviously knew where he was going with her at least somewhat. (And I assume that in River's first two episodes with Ten, that Moffat wouldn't have introduced her if he hadn't known he would be exploring her later as showrunner? Though that's speculation, because I have no idea about real world timelines. Though I'm sure he didn't know the details then, but even after The Silence in the Library, 'the Doctor's wife' theory was already floating around.) Though another interesting thing is that no one but Moffat has ever written River (he's written every ep she's been in), so I'd like to think that he had a very definite idea about where he was going with her. But I can say that even if Moffat knew in 5.03, the actors most certainly did not know, lol. That's not the sort of thing you tell people if you want to keep it a secret. And I don't think Alex knowing or not would affect how the character was in that episode, since River is always enigmatic about spoilers. River would have realized right off that Amy had never ( ... )

I did not know that SM wrote all the River episodes himself - hmmm.... it makes me even happier! :) So, yeah, you're right, it's all planned and SM has an idea of where he is going so YAY. In fact, in the Library episode the Vashta Narada are the first ones who say 'When the question is asked, Silence will fall.'

I just love it.

I think I'm going to watch Blink next :) Definitely!!
