I could've sworn there was another scene with Elaine before she got kidnapped, it was another reason to finish the three tasks. Since she rejected all of the pirates, he needs to become one so no one takes offense at Elaine choosing him over the others.

Now that you mention it this sounds really familiar - but I don't think I could have missed it, as you can only meet Elaine when you return with the file and you get thrown in the water immediately afterward. Maybe it's one of the later scenes? I'll have to keep posting so we can find out. :P
But yeah, I do remember something about that too...
Ah-ha! I knew that underwater part looked lethal. even though I was thinking it'd kill you in two seconds, or that you didn't have any chance of escaping your death to begin with, which would've most likely been the case had this been a Sierra game. um. >_>;
Annnnd because I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to edit posts in lj...
Would Guybrush be able to actually do some of the commands he gets after dying if you'd already picked up the idol? Since, y'know, the idol wouldn't be holding him down anymore, and all that.
This is a good question! :3 I didn't think to mention it but as soon as you pick up the idol it acts like a cut-scene, Guybrush automatically walks over and picks up the sword and climbs out of the water - you can't control him again until after he talks to the lookout and resolves to save the Governor.
