The tapping of the typewriter keys could be heard down the hall, and as Peter descended the stairs and made his way to Sarah Jane's room, he had to smile to himself, because he knew instinctively that it was her. Outside of the doorway he hesitated, wondering whether he should disturb her, but if nothing else Peter Carlisle was a man who had a firm sense of his priorities. He rapped his knuckles against the frame three times before drawing the curtain back just enough that he could peer inside.

"Look at you," he remarked, his smile edged in awe. "You look gorgeous."

Sarah Jane glanced over her shoulder, fidgeting idly with a pin with one hand as she typed the rest of her sentence (...which rounds out the body of government.) She slowly rose to her feet, brushing her hands over the dress. "I assure you, it was a lot more gorgeous thirty years ago," she said, smiling slightly. "But thank you."

Quietly, Peter pushed the curtain aside and stepped forward, taking hold of Sarah Jane's hand without invitation. "Stop that," he gently insisted, and lifted her fingers to his lips so that he could press a kiss to the back of her knuckles. "You look gorgeous."

Her lips slowly curled up in a pleased smile and she watched him kiss her hand with great delight. "I thought an intelligent man like you would know that a woman of a certain age is constantly envying her own youth," she teased dryly and she honestly wished she weren't so bloody nervous at all this. "You don't look half bad yourself."

"I clean up alright," Peter allowed, and gave a turn in place so that Sarah Jane could properly appraise his efforts. It wasn't anything fancy, but his khakis and shirt were pressed, and he'd shaved. His hair, however, looked the same as ever. "Are you ready?"
