I always wonder about the human Doctor, what things are like for him - I never thought of things like not having the TARDIS, or losing some of the acuity of his senses, of just not knowing where he fits in - and all the surprise of new human characteristics. This story deals with that wonderfully. Add to that Jack being completely devastated after the 456, Ianto being a wreck (but taking care of everyone but himself anyway), and Gwen not knowing WHAT to do - angst all around, but not so overwhelming it makes the story hard to read. Smart of them to call Martha in!
Perfectly fine solution to the triangular romance situation, too. And the illustrations are adorable!

I agree, the illustrations are awesome. I couldn't be more pleased by the work "my" artists did.

Some favorite bits...the developing Doctor/Ianto friendship and bedsharing -
angsty, vulnerable Doctor wondering if he had a place in Torchwood, dreaming Jack's nightmare and wanting to help him, falling in love with Ianto, but not wanting to hurt Jack by taking him away from him, being brave in trying to heal Jack not knowing if he'd survive and his desperate attempt to run away (thankfully thwarted by his own body & Jack & Ianto) -
Ianto doing his best to hold Torchwood together, to connect with Jack and stand up to him/being brave/willing to go and confront the wounded lion (Jack) in his den (office) more than once, plus it was just amusing to me that Ianto would go work off his post-Jack talk temper by going down to the armory -
Jack so sad that he couldn't keep Ianto from harm, post-psychic healing Jack's remorse over his treatment of them all and the lovely threesome.

I think the Doctor/Ianto friendship was the part that took me most by surprise. I'd expected the story to be rather Jack-centered when I first started, but I think my POV choice helped there. But it ended up as one of my favorite bits as well, if I do say so myself.

1. I've seen a number of scenarios in this vein - one of the most memorable being an alt!Martha/Ten II fic. I remember that at one point, he asks her, heartbreakingly, why neither the Time Lord Doctor or Rose wanted him. He's rather blase about it in my fic, but I'm sure there was a touch of that for him, too.
2. I love vulnerability as well, especially for characters who are usually very strong.
3. I didn't expect it either! But he's the only one really in a position to care, and it's Ianto - he almost can't help sensing what someone else needs from him.
4. Neither do I. Instalove is boring.
5. I hadn't thought of the mopping scene that way! I kinda think the poor boy was probably having a very quiet panic attack during that scene, and Ianto didn't really notice.
6. Blame yamx7. Thanks ( ... )
