Bone Shop Part Six

Aug 03, 2009 07:51

The sixth chapter of my serial novella Bone Shop is online now! Plus some notes on the chapter, which would've been more extensive if I hadn't been writing them late late last night.

Read, enjoy, and donate if you can spare it.

Great chapter. I'm hoping to see some more romance with Marla, and finally meeting Lao Tsung was cool too.

Anyway, I'm wondering... How long exactly is this novella going to end up being? I mean, there's a whole lot of stuff from Marla's past that you could write about. It doesn't need to be a novella, it could probably end up becoming a full-blown novel. For starters, there's Marla meeting Rondeau, finding the cloak, becoming a badass mercenary, meeting Sauvage, knocking that guy from Dead Reign off the rooftop, re-killing Somerset... The list goes on. Are you planning on putting a lot of those things in? Oh yeah, maybe something about the much-mentioned incubus would be cool too. Not to mention the affairs Marla's had with women, if what you wrote in Blood Engines is true.

I'm not certain yet how long it will be, but a lot of that stuff'll be in there. Maybe not the incubus or the affairs with women (at least, not in any detail), but the other stuff, yeah.

It might end up being 50 or 60,000 words, more a short novel than a novella, but I'm not sure. Won't be as long as the usual Marla novels though. Unless I'm really misjudging. :)

I just had another idea for the novella, if you're interested. Elsie Jarrow has been mentioned a bit in the novels, but we never really know what was so bad about her. Maybe it was Marla who put her in Blackwing. At the very least she could have helped. Like I said, there's an incredible amount of things that were only mentioned in the books that could be used here. I sort of picture the end of Bone Shop being a scene when Marla gets inaugurated as Chief Sorcerer.

Thanks. I have a pretty clear idea of what's going to be in the novella at this point, though it would be tempting to write about ol' Elsie. The novella will end roughly around the time Marla becomes chief sorcerer... though perhaps not on a triumphant moment of coronation. And that still leaves me a few years between the end of Bone Shop and the start of Blood Engines to play with in the future...

Jawsome, again. You, hungry, at 8:30 pm on a Sunday night are a better writer than most others under favorable conditions. Thanks again!

P.S. Got a job! So, like I said, my next paycheck, there's a chunk of it reserved for this whole thing.

Congrats on the job! And not for purely selfish reasons. :)

great prequel anonymous August 5 2009, 15:51:03 UTC
Halfway through Blood Engine, when at work I discovered your website and the prequel. Its pretty great stuff. A lot of questions and loose ends and such come up in Blood Engine and its great to see whats going on prior to that first novel.

I'm personally a big fan of the alternate pocket universe that Artie and Ernesto created. I think a lot can happen there. You've really made the possibilities endless with that place, thats probably why I like it so much. I think thats a majority of the drawing force for me though. There really isn't a definate way things work in the world that you've created for these novels and anything is possible.

Thank you T.A. Pratt.
