yeah my biggest problem with reading the hunger games was that suzanne collins portrayed appalachian people as poor and dumb. crap like that pains me bad.
I think in that context education was being very limited for anyone who didn't need it to produce techie things for the Capitol. It wasn't meant as a fault of the people but rather a device of oppression. All the districts were given only what knowledge they absolutely needed for their particular type of labor.
i think you may be right - but it still strikes a nerve. too, the entire populace of a place isn't going to be dumb as rocks no matter what the government is doing.
I felt like there were smart people in each district throughout the series. They tended to be the rebels or those most creatively skirting the oppressive rules.
