I really enjoy Chabon, but he has trouble sticking the ending to my satisfaction. It mattered less in Kavalier & Clay, where the narrative's jumped ahead to mention things that happen after the last page of the book. But with the two more linear mysteries, an insufficiently climactic climax is more problematic.
I have to confess that although I liked the beginning of Kavalier & Clay, I got bored in the middle and never finished it. So this is the first Chabon I've read all the way through to the end.
I can understand that. I really enjoyed Kavalier & Clay, but it took me a while to finish it. Normally I gorge, rather than grazing, when I'm in the middle of a book.
