Someone tell me what on earth is "Meme" short for?

And, would someone ping me descretely and translate 1337 into the Queen's English for me?  I HATE when words creep into common usage and I've NO clue what they are, despite the fact that I'd probably not be caught dead using them, as would be likely with the 2nd word.
