Merlin: Episode 4.12 The Sword in the Stone Part 1

Oh dear. I wish I could get the get the producers of this show - the Twu Lurve Obsessives I mean, not the other ones who know what they're doing - in a small room with a large bucket of haddock with which I could beat them repeatedly around the head. (Thats actually not as kinky as it sounds.) Eventually perhaps, they'd explain WTF they're thinking ( Read more... )

Well, you definitely know more about intelligent story telling and about this show than its own writers and producers have given expression of through the last episodes ( ... )

Hey there:) Agree again - whats with all this agreeing Im doing?!:p- and with what you wrote in your journal. :) And yes no show of this budget should be as incoherent and slapdash about continuity and character - but then again no one seems to notice - not the critics and not the most vocal fans. The Dr Who fandom would have cyber-strung 'em up.:p ( ... )

Again you totally convince me ... :) On the suffering thing, I agree it has got too far, especially as we don't get the reveal and as Merlin is still again and again treated like a dog by Arthur. That last point is the worst for me, first they seem to be equal partners and then, back to cruel jokes and physical slaps (eh, actually they used sharp weapons on poor Merlin a few episodes ago ( ... )

Hey there :) Colin suggested something about a cliffhanger at the end of S4 in his interview with Julia at ClickClaque which got me nicely excited - but then I realised he also described the parts of S4 we've seen in terms I certainly didn't recognise. So... :p

If and when we do get a reveal I so agree - it needs to be used as a proper dramatic moment over several eps - lets face it if the ludicrous A/G contrivance was dragged out for a few weeks then a genuine conflict should take a good while to sort out. :)

It's always refreshing to read a review and think "oh, *that's* what annoyed me so much!" every few paragraphs ( ... )

I do agree actually that this ep was infinitely more entertaining than the previous two if only for the A/M interaction and I guess I would even have loved Simple Arthur if that wasn't the sum total of their relationship for so long. Plus theres the whole 'misuse of magic/Arthur can't be trusted to make the right decision' problem. BUT Colin and Bradley were so charming it was hard not to love those scenes ( ... )

True, the servant issue is only tenable as long as it remains one with Gwen as well as Merlin. I suppose I've been seeing Arthur and Gwen's relationship as the unrealistic one and not really set it as a standard, which is why I find it quite believable that the difference of status might create a distance between Arthur and Merlin even now.

Merlin's lying, on the other hand, is horribly, horribly butchering his character. I truly hope that in 4.13., they will go back to the Merlin of the first half of the season (i.e. lots of honesty between him and Arthur). If Merlin lies about every little thing, it cheapens the "necessary" lies considerably.

Hope you have a good Christmas! :)

Perhaps a slap round the chops with a haddock would bring the Twu Wuve Obsessives (TWO) back to their senses. Failing that just shove the fish down their gob and see if that gets the messages across.

We mock the mere suggestion of a magical reveal now. At the beginning of the season I was so certain we'd have one and the first half of the season was certianly heading towards that direction. Then we got derailed by the Gwen and Arthur (un)Fun Bus. I mean they might still do it (I need to get my delusions sorted out), they could theoretically throw in a scene right at the very end. I'm not sure I would like that even if they did , because no doubt they'd skip a year again before season 5.

I did actually quite like this episode. But it's a conditional like. If they completely balls up the finale then I reserve the right to retract my view. I've got my glarey eyes on for the finale, just in case.
