Um. How does one go about letting one's flatmates know that one wishes to move out as soon as possible, 6 weeks from Christmas, and yet still convince them to let you buy from them the bed that they have been letting you use for the past 6 months?

*pleads for advice*

maybe tell them you're really sorry to have to do this to them so close to christmas, but you'll make it up to them in the way of some extra cash by buying the bed off them?

i have no idea.

It should be in your tenancy agreement somewhere about how much notice you have to give, and as long as you're willing to pay rent for that entire notice period you can move out whenever you want.

Maybe say you'll keep paying rent until they find someone, up to a maximum of X weeks, since it's so close to Christmas? And keep the whole bed-buying negotiations separate?

I dunno, my first set of flatmates (up in Auckland) dumped my ass by leaving a letter on my bed.

Uh.

Hmm. The standard period is two weeks; in the absence of a written agreement the notice needed will probably default to "a reasonable period," which will effectively mean two or three weeks. I think.

I'm totally basing this on what happened when I called the Department of Labour to say, "Hey, I have no contract, how much notice to I need to give to leave?" And they were all, 1) no contract? WTF? and 2) if you don't have an individual employment (or, I'm guessing, tenancy) agreement, everything defaults to whatever the law is.

I know you have to give at least a week's notice, and probably two; if you're really desperate for the bed, you could probably sweeten that by saying you'll pay till they find a new tenant, or for four weeks, whichever comes first.
