bobbin lace project

Nov 18, 2006 02:07

I am fairly pleased with myself. I have made my first ever handkerchief/small doily in bobbin lace.
The pattern is a very nice, but really easy pattern called crown an triangles, it was first published in womans day magazine, but has been reprinted in the book Lessons in Bobbin Lace.

how pretty!
I'm intimidated by the thought of trying to make bobbin lace. Part of me really wants to try and the other part wants to run away.

It is really not that difficult ;-) it may look it, but its not. Remember, little girls of 5-6 years old used to do this. I have taught myself from internet sources and my new book Lessons in bobbinlace making by Doris Southard. You can start off with homemade equipment, or you could get lucky and stumbe over it at a fleamarket.

Whooo congratulations with your first lace edged handkerchief. Its lovely.
I rarely make lace these days, embroidery took over my interres, but it is a lovely thing to make lace. I have a very old lace on my pillow from 1840 called Louise, with more than 200 pairs of bobbins on, and its ages since i worked on it.
I remember how it was to finish my first handkerchief and its such a nice feeling, that you have done it!
Congratulations

I am accumulating the supplies needed to make Bobbin Lace and the one item I am having difficult with is the Pillow. I am interested in a set up much like the one seen in this post & must ask if you purchased it or made it? I am willing to make my own and am wondering if you could post some picture of the pillow from different views; are there supports on both side of the round pillow? are they resting brackets or fixed? those short of things. And probably the most important is there any aspect of the pillow that you have had to learn to live with?

Your lace is lovely and I congratulate you on developing this skill.

I am sorry to be so late answering you.
The pillow is quite typical of the danish pillows. It is meant for making yardage and not motifs if you know what I mean. I bought it used for not a lot of money. You find them quite often at flea markets here in Denmark.
The kind of pillow you get depend on what you want to do. Do you want to do yardage like bucks point or torchon or tonder then the roller pillow is good. If you want to do motifs like honiton then it is best to get a pillow without a roller.
I would encourage you to join the Arachne maillist which is very active and encourages a lot of different kinds of lace. Mostly bobbinlace but also needle lace, crotchet and knitted lace.
Hope that helps
Tania
