Title: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Author: xoxo_nat_xx
Pairing: Eunhyuk/Donghae
Ratings: PG
Summary: Notes on a noticeboard. Two guys in the arts faculty. Poems, wit and humour. The clash of two wills.

Eunhyuk pushes past the crowd standing around the notification board, eager to get a glimpse of what attracts all the students to gather. His spectacles slide down a little on his nose, and he pulls his backpack up onto his shoulder, determinedly nudging his way through. Once at the front, he stares, puzzled and confused.

A yellow envelope hangs on to the board, staring back mockingly at him. Someone has written a note above, and it is pinned teasingly near the mouth of the envelope.

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art does injustice to it.
I ne'er was struck before that hour,
By such horror and despair.
My heart has left its dwelling-place,
To seek solace for the atrocities it has seen.

Eunhyuk frowns disapprovingly at the note, it must be an act of some student from the arts faculty, out to destroy some girl's reputation. Needless to say, the photograph that was previously inside the envelope is currently being passed around like there's no tomorrow. Eunhyuk catches a glance, and he freezes. No girl deserves such a treatment, definitely, he huffs quietly to himself.

Pulling out a sheet of paper in his bag, he proceeds to the nearest table to pen down his thoughts, as the crowd slowly disperses, tired of the same news within a few hours.

------------------------

Donghae's friend waves to him, and beckons him over to the notice board, where he has previously placed the announcement for all to see. It is just for laughs, just something to lift the spirits of all campus students in this drab university. Arts students are well-known for their quirks and pranks anyway, no one takes them seriously.

Donghae glances at the envelope, and realizes that there's a note placed in it, one that is written on bright red, hard to miss out in that pale yellow envelope. Raising his eyes at his friend adjacent to him, he proceeds to pull it out, smirking all throughout. Another one to humiliate, he thinks to himself.

O, Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
The world is in love with your wit and humour.
But wait! Thy deserves no worship from me.
Deny thy conscience, and refuse thy heart,
Cupid wilt not seek you.
If this be error, and upon me prov'd,
I never lived, nor no man ever lov'd.

Donghae raises his eyebrows at this short message. Someone who dares to talk back to him for once, interesting, he thinks to himself. He admires his courage, and respects the way the newcomer can attack him in the world of poems and sonnets.

A challenge, he savours the word upon his tongue, as he pulls out another note to pen down a quick reply.

------------------------

Eunhyuk passes by the notice board again, and there is some commotion happening once more. He sees another note pinned to the top of the board, and all the students are clamouring for a look. He frowns, the handwriting looks familiar. A friend hisses quietly to him beside him, whispering the verse into his ear.

Nay, thy will never know!
She lulled me asleep, ah! Woe betide!
La belle Dame sans Merci
Hath thee in thrall!

Eunhyuk clenches his fists unconsciously, this person is bringing it too far. He stalks to the front of the notice board, oblivious to the stares that people are flashing at him at this instant. He glares, infuriated, at the annoying and offending piece of paper in front of him.

Mocking has never been brought so far, he thinks subconsciously to himself. And it has been brought one step further by this unknown person. He tears down the note and hurriedly crushes it, much to the astonishment of his friend, and to the disbelief of those around. Throwing it aside, he brings out a pen, opting to write his message directly on that envelope itself.

You have taken it too far,
Your thoughts had come unstrung.
I foresee you groping to find them as they rolled,
And then I know,
That you are helplessly uncompassionate,
As I am helplessly unable to correct you.

Eunhyuk storms off immediately, and the crowd reforms again, eager to read what the challenger has written again. Someone in the crowd smirks, and he slips into the shadow again, following that interesting guy a little closer.

-----------------------

Eunhyuk narrows his eyes, the thought has been budging him for hours. His literature professor hasn't been able to claimed it back, yet, and Eunhyuk's brows furrow even deeper. His friend nudges him slightly, and he jerks out of his thoughts. He glances at the small note that is now placed in front of him, with his friend shrugging nonchalantly back at him.

I'm sorry if I have offended you?

Eunhyuk glares at the note, recognizing that handwriting immediately. He scrutinizes the sentence carefully, there is a slight dip at the letter 'u' of 'you', as if the person is unsure of what to write next. The question mark is faint, as if it is added as an afterthought, not wanting to seem rude. He crushes the note, and thinks of himself as a petulant child, which leads him to quickly straightening the piece of paper again.

Another note makes its way to his desk, and Eunhyuk quickly reads it.

It was for fun…

Eunhyuk scoffs at the note, this person has to be the biggest blockhead in the century ever. Ruining some girl's reputation for fun? He hides a snort, this he has to crush, or he will never be able to take it down.

Some cycle starts, like a conductor waving his baton about in a smooth, lucid movement, conducting the beat firmly. Thump thump thump. Every minute a new note appears in front of him, begging for forgiveness, although Eunhyuk isn't sure what is there to ask for his forgiveness. He crushes every one that follows, and a new one just pops out in its place again. Eunhyuk sneers at the onslaught of letters, it is as if someone is trying to ridicule him.

The bell rings, and Eunhyuk hops out of his chair immediately, wanting to run off for his dance class immediately. Before he can pack his bag, someone grabs his hand and stares right into his eyes.

"Cynical, aren’t we?" The stranger states, and Eunhyuk immediately knows who this guy is.

"Aren't you going to help me?" The stranger questions, and Eunhyuk shakes his wrist out of that person's grip, raising his eyebrows in confusion in the process.

"In getting rid that 'uncompassionate' sense as you so kindly wrote in front of the whole school population?" The unknown guy continues, and Eunhyuk leans onto the table, shifting his weight as he pulls the bag onto his shoulders.

"Why should I?" Eunhyuk asks, drawing his eyes to the floor as he traces patterns on his faded jeans with his middle finger of his right hand, while his left does a last minute check that he has brought everything, his pencil box, water bottle, all with him, ready to leave instantly.

"Because…" The stranger leaves it hanging, as he stares back at Eunhyuk.

"Because?"

Donghae smirks at the guy in front of him.

"Because you are the first one to seem clever enough to be on par with me." He replies easily, and he catches that fleeting look of bewilderment and incredulity on the other's face.

"Name's Donghae, Eunhyuk." Donghae adds on, as he leans a little closer into Eunhyuk's personal space, hiding a secret smile as Eunhyuk glares back furiously at him. Without leaving any chance for Eunhyuk to recover, he draws back and bites his inner cheek in a way that he knows, girls will faint at the sight of it.

"See you soon, Eunhyuk." Donghae turns around and walks to the door, just remembering to glance over his shoulder to present on last smirk before leaving the classroom.
