PLYGAIN

A/N: Plygain is/was a custom in many parts of Wales. It’s a very early church service (“plygain” means ’daybreak’) between 3am and 6am on Christmas Day. The men would sing three- or four-part harmony carols without musical accompaniment in a candlelit service that could last anything up to three hours. So utterly beautiful. The idea of Jack following Ianto because he knows how important the service is to him made me cry with happiness.

Ah, clever you - you picked up on it. I like the idea of the two of them sort of rehabilitating one another without truly realising it.

This was terribly beautiful and a little bit heartwrenching. I feel Ianto - I know what it's like to feel the schism between those happier times lost forever and a present that isn't quite what it was meant to be. Good on you for exploring that with him. Thank you for sharing this. I loved it. ♥

I do tend to like the idea of a Ianto who doesn't really fit, just as Jack doesn't truly fit, but that when they are together they are perfect. And while I have been blessed with a relatively wonderful and fulfilling life, I did have a hiccup so, like you, I could feel for Ianto when he considers what he once had.

Since I started watching TW back in March 08 (yeah, latecomer, relatively speaking!), it occurred to me that both Jack and Ianto are terribly broken, but the beauty of their relationship is that their pieces fit together, and that's why they work. It may not be perfect, but it's theirs, and it works for them. ♥

I only witnessed plygain once, when spending a christmas holiday with Bran and his family 20 years ago. I'm glad to see it's holding on someplace in a typical Welsh fashion.

It is wonderful, isn't it? And I think more people are realising if we don't maintain customs and traditions we lose something precious beyond belief.

Thanks - I really enjoyed writing it. I love bringing out the Welsh in Ianto.
