Okay that was beautiful and gorgeous and I want to write like that when I grow up!

I love how well this conversation covers Ianto insecurities and Jack determination not to go anywhere without Ianto, all without them actually directly mentioning it. Because of course they wouldn't.

Also I am totally with Jack "Save the Earth - it’s the only planet with chocolate!"

You are such a shameless flatterer - I like that in a person! *grin* I like the idea that they manage to tell one another so much without actually saying the words.

And I sort of like the idea of Jack being addicted to fridge magnets...

I'm so glad to hear that. I could see it inside my head but wondered if I'd managed to convey it properly. Thank you.

Deep inside, and safely caged for the most part, was the fear that Jack’s wanderlust would overwhelm him and he would take off.

Ouch.

Oh, and to go from philosophical stargazing to alien Big Brother, only Jack! That man has to make fun of everything, especially if there's the risk of letting someone come too close. And then, in the most roundabout way possible, he tells Ianto that he likes where he is - with him.

*sigh* Ah, that was so sweet. I think I need some chocolate now.

Ah, but from the viewpoint of someone who will live forever, stargazing, philosophy and Big Brother are worthy of equal respect. Jack's defences are over a century old and deeply ingrained, but he's fighting hard. And Ianto's just as bad in his own way.

It wasn't too sweet, was it?

Mh, how old is Jack at that point? I always assume that in the 51st century people will live easily 150, 200 years, probably longer, so in my opinion pre-Fragments Jack isn't that much older than a mortal human from his time would be, just more prone to angst because he knows he is facing eternity.
I do hope Earth is (or will be) more commonly known as the birth planet of chocolate than that of Big Brother. Reality tv being known and common throughout the universe in Jack's time would explain why his concept of what should stay behind locked doors is different from ours, though.
In the end we are all children of our home culture. What makes the difference is the willingness to accept other perspectives.

No, it was just right. Bittersweet, heavy in flavour, like dark chocolate.

Well, we don't really know how old Jack was when he hooked up with the Doctor, but I'll agree that by his time the lifespan is probably around 200+ years. I'd guess he was about 50 years. However, the defences I see him having aren't age-related but a product of his life. He's suffered loss after loss and he clearly has abandonment issues (both passive and active). He's so damn afraid of life and at the same time is frantic for it.

While I can't stand reality TV, I have to concede that it strikes a chord with people and it will probably shed more light on our society than any number of learned articles when our descendants come to study us. And I think it will probably come and go in waves as time passes and fashions change. At least I hope so!

I'm glad it worked, though. That's always a worry.

Delightful.

I like the ending very much, that Sirius connects them even though they were born on different planets.

(It also made me go and get a hot chocolate for myself. I suspect Ianto's is better.)

Yes, I liked the symmetry of that. And Ianto's hot chocolate would be utterly splendid.
