New milonga

Yesterday found a new Monday-night milonga one block from my future apartment. Second best floor of all the dance places I have been to in BA, lots of space to move, friendly people, young, hardly any tourists. Salon Canning, the most pretentious milonga in BA, has the best floor covering and used to be standars Monday night fare. No longer. At ( Read more... )

Is it really that unpleasant to be surrounded by tourists on the dancefloor?..

It is quite a mixed bag. Though tourists bring money into the economy, they force prices up for everyone. For now, the market is not yet saturated, so now milongas are organized when the existing ones get too crowded. Also, there are people who come to milongas not to dance per se, but to socialize with foreigners or locals (depending on the "approach"). The patronage of Catedral, for example, seems to consist of about 1/5 dancers, 4/5 loungers. When the seating places get filled up, the non-dancers spill over to the floor and greatly reduce the available tango-space. Having said that, pretty much all the milongas host many regulars whose main purporpose there is dancing.
