Poetry Jam: Carol Ann Duffy

Apr 15, 2020 20:40

March's book was Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife. You can find lunabee34's post here.

In April we're reading Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese. Our schedule for the year can be found here.

A poetry collection featuring the point of view of fictional or mythological women is exactly my thing. I didn't like everything - I thought Frau Freud was particularly weak - but I found a lot of cleverness and humor in it.

My favorite phrase:

The wolf, I knew, would lead me deep into the woods,
away from home, to a dark tangled thorny place
lit by the eyes of owls.
(from "Little Red-Cap")

My favorite poems:

Mrs Midas
Anne Hathaway*
Mrs Rip Van Winkle

*This one stood out to me for its affection and feeling of connection.

What did you think?
