The Longer Inauguration Report

Jan 22, 2009 21:28

This is fairly long, since I'd like to record this thoroughly, and maybe give a feel for it all to the people who couldn't make it down.

Part I: Monday Night, Down into DC. )

"Mary Ellen Carter" makes a lot of sense in that context: rise again, and we have.

I think I was telling the story about election night and how the crowd reacted to thatliardiego's performance of The Eensie Weensie Spider. The Dad asked me what the original song was, and later, when he asked me what it was about, I decided it was enough of a flimsy excuse to burst into song. Because damn it, this feels unreal enough that there should be spontaneous musical numbers.

It is just so amazing to see so many people engaged in bearing witness to a peaceful transition of power. I honestly have a hard time coming up with any types of parallels, of events with so many people with a singular focus and yet where the overall mood is joyous and supportive. I can't come up with anything else like it.

Thank you for posting your poetical, lyrical words to explain a day that can't be explained without being there and living it.

When Obama was done with the oath, the yelling that rose up was the kind you could only manage by yelling right along with it. Wonderful. Historic. So many voices.

About this point in reading your article, I started getting weepy with happiness. Thank you.
