I've been trying to write about my recent trip through the Western Balkans, but it's really challenging to make it under, you know, 30 pages. I looked through my pictures tonight and felt so happy... I would like to post some photos with descriptions and stories, but just in case I don't get to that, here is a random selection ( Read more... )

That staircase is beautiful. And the photo of you two at sunrise.

Will you still be in Paris in January?

OH!

The sign is talking about the war, I'm sure. So many people visit Mostar to look at the bridge and take the exact same picture of it (that I also took about 5 times). But the bridge was destroyed during the war, and rebuilt, and it's important for people to remember the history. Hence the English words (it was a very, very touristy area). I highly doubt that anyone living in the area or who speaks Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian needs to be told not to forget, so it's there for the foreigners. I'll talk more about that in an upcoming post.

I'm looking forward to your trip report as I'm hoping to go to the area next year :) Have been to Sarajevo, Montenegro and Croatia before but there are still so many places to see... did you like Mostar? I only drove through in a bus and it was still devastated from the war back then, at least the streets the bus was driving in :(

I loved Mostar. The people were really friendly and the town felt so safe. It was a bit heartbreaking though, because the evidence of war is still pretty abundant. The town has come back to life, the bridge has been rebuilt, but the buildings along the front lines are still marked with bulletholes everywhere. We didn't spend too much time there, but I would go back in a second.

That picture of Manning is composed beautifully. I can't wait for the unabridged version so I can writhe in my cubicle in abject jealousy ;)
