Nice post, Tam! I agree that it's hard to self-promote without being a douche, and sometimes it's hard to realize that I've been one, until well after I've posted/tweeted/Facebooked. I think you hit the nail on the head word of mouth is the best advertising. That said, I don't think that authors or artists should be shy about self-promotion. As you said, they just need to be smart about how they self-promote.

Oh, I think you're a great example of someone who gets your awesome out in the right way! You blog about interest things, you share great little tidbits about your life on your twitter and you give as much as you take. *is inspired*
So, when you get things published, you'll be all set for your legion of followers friends to sing your praises...because your stories will be amazing!
Right on, Tammy...ext_241830November 14 2010, 16:35:06 UTC
This is a GREAT post. It's a reminder that the whole point of life is just to be ourselves. As I recall, when Twitter started, it was like a different form of Facebook -- see what your friends are up to. I still enjoy FB a lot more than Twitter now, because somewhere along the way Twitter turned into this promotional machine that I really don't enjoy too much. Well done, Tammy. And now...I shall post a link to this blog on my Twitter ;-)

God, I just CAN'T DO IT! I'm not a stump-jumoping evangelical, self-righteous promoter. Remember when we were in Hartford and this guy said we hadn't made it till we'd been on Oprah? Well, screw Oprah, and Katie Couric can jump in the lake. I'm just a quiet, goddam writer wo wants to write. I write flash to remind myself I'm still alive, and occasionally serious stuff to let the world know I'm not a joker, but I'll never make more money than my wife does on her scratch-off tickets.

I think though, that the days of stump-jumping, self-righteous promoter is over. It starts small now, you spread the word like a virus and do it in a way that's not overly in your face and word spreads...until then (or even way after then) you just keep doing what you're doing because you enjoy it and for no other reason. :))
Oprah? Ewwww. I don't know if I have any markers to say "I've made it" but I know Oprah isn't it.

Right. Sell your book, not yourself...but in a sense, you are. You're selling yourself as someone who can write a great book.
Twitter is still new and shiny to me, so I'm digging it much more than Facebook. Plus, it's easier to follow an un-follow people there. And I find myself having conversations more there as well as getting information that makes me feel more involved in the world...or at least the literary world (is there another kind?)
Well when that question is answered, then it will be ready to write. Until then, just live, have adventures, meet people. When you're ready, you'll have a lot of experiences to fictionalize and a lot of friends followers to sing your praises--and buy your book! :))

Anyway, interesting post. Self-promotion seems like such a tricky thing. I dunno. I wish I had something interesting to add myself.
