Fuck these assholes! I swear, not only can older people be hateful as hell, they seem to delight in making trouble. It actually may not be religion, but rather a class thing. They probably saw themselves as "above" you and that dog groomers are on the same level as...I dunno...hotel maids or janitors (not that they should be considered as "low").
As a former hospital worker who was not 1) a doctor, or 2) a nurse, I encountered the same thing too. I was a phlebotomist and a damn good one but frequently people thought they were entitled to abuse me.
Hopefully your boss will stand up for you to the home office. I doubt much of anything will happen since you obviously have an excellent work history.

If he existed, he'd probably tell those two people they were complete and total assholes.
Yeah, well my boss told me today that the old bat came into the shop angry, that she was spoiling for a fight before she even saw the dog. When my boss tried to appease the woman she broke out in tears, as if this was the most earth-shattering thing she had ever had happen to her.
I say good riddance. I hope they can find a place that treats them as they should be treated, cos I'm done.
