This was a difficult chapter to review because there was so much in it. I'm sure I'm going to leave something out.
I found Lucius' prison induced near madness very informative about his true state of mind. The guilt over what he'd done probably would have killed him had it not been for Severus' visits (I assume he visited more than once).
I can visualize Lucius frantically scrabbling at Severus, desperate to...I was going to say 'fuck' but it was more than that. That was probably his only life line.
The exchange between Lucius and Severus when Severus was a new professor...the one thing I picked up on was how their conversation was scripted. What I mean is when two people who at their cores don't believe in what they're discussing but have to give the impression that they do, their speech follows certain patterns. There's a phony quality to it and you can sense it sometimes. I picked up on it during their conversation. Well done! It's a subtle quality and hard to express in print
( ... )
I loved Will and the idea that Lucius could have fallen for him had things been different. Lucius' life, at least in this story, seems to be about duty and discarded opportunities.
I'm glad you caught the subtext in the scene between Snape and Malfoy at Hogwarts. It was difficult to portray, but I was going for that stilted type of conversation between them.
Thanks so much for the kindness. Still no word on the contest, and it looks like it will be another week before I'll know if I am in or not.
