I actually started crying a little in the theater during that part. I was just so sad and scared because that was peoples' REAL reactions. Everytime I start thinking about it I just think of the dancing penis scene and then I feel better :)
I tend to like Sasha Baron Cohen's satire a lot, and I've really enjoyed seeing him stick it to certain well-known bigots using his Ali G and Borat characters. But Bruno wasn't really in the vein of either one of those; very few of the people he messed with were well-known bigots, so basically he was either interacting with actors or fucking around with average people. There was no redeeming social value in his exposing the bigotry of the common people because we already *know* that bigotry exists. Saying, "Hey, these people are douches who hate gays!" isn't a statement that opens anyone's eyes or exposes anything.
For example, during one of his segments in Borat, he easily gets a huge group of people to sing racist songs about throwing Jews down a well. That did have some exposure value, because most people believe that overt racism is something that only KKK members engage in - it definitely would have been eye-opening, at least for some people, to see how widespread it still is and how easily it can be accessed
