Followup to nazi unicorns

Re: the Nazi unicorn tattoo I posted a bit ago - turns out it's intended as a mockery. I must say I would never get a swastika and the words "White Power" tattooed on myself, even if intended as satire - most people are not going to realize that it's a joke, and then you're going to have people thinking you're a racist asshat.

LOL, I got sucked helplessly into badtattoos_4 last night, after resisting it for a very long time. ;) I think I made it into bed at 5am...

Many, many moons ago (1992) I was friends with a group of very ecclectic people, who were putting out an absurdist satirical magazine every once in a while. On one occasion they put out a mag with a huge swastica on it, and underneath it, in very, very fine print it said "we are not affiliated nor do we condone bla bla bla..." etc disclaimer, in an obvious attempt to make fun of the disclaimer mania.

Anyway, I did not see that fine print, because it was very, very small, didn't even really pick up the magazine in my own hands . I just cut all relations with the whole group, and did not find out about the funny disclaimer part until years later...

It's a very touchy subject.. at least the magazine is paper, it's long gone ... but a tattoo???

Yep. That's exactly the problem when trying to bring humor to a subject like Nazism, people's emotional responses are usually going to be so immediate and intense that any subtle joke will get lost. And I think it's also a case of Poe's Law - we're not going to immediately get that it's parody, because people really have done shit that stupid and been sincere about it.

Did you ever become friends with those people again after you found out?
