More SF(X)

Since only one person said that they were fed up of posts about bloody SF, here's another one.

A recent SFX poll has determined that Serenity is better than Star Wars. I don't personally agree but you know, these things happen. Except they also think that Serenity is better than Alien, Blade Runner, The Terminator, The Matrix and even Back To ( Read more... )

To be fair they could be referring to the Directors fuck up of Star Wars with all the annoying extra cgi that doesn't make sense or add anything, at which point ANY film is better than Star Wars.

Where's Lord of the Rings? That's clearly a post-apocalyptic sci-fi that depicts the efforts of the fearful, unwashed masses to tear down the last remnants of civilisation.

Damn. I also seem to have forgotten U-571, that film set in an alternate reality where the Americans boarded a German submarine during WW2 and captured its Enigma machine.

However, it seems that any martial arts film featuring death-defying acrobatics is now considered to be SF, so we really have our work cut for us in deciding on suitable candidates. Good thing I'm watching about 13 kung fu films this month!

Since Sherlock Holmes is being remade as an action hero presumably the Sherlock novels will also become SF.

I did not say that SC should be defined as SF because of that; I said that if Batman is SF then Sin City is also, but I think it's fairly clear that it's only included in a very broad perspective. Besides, it was just a daft chatter with Martin on the subject. I'd rather watch a vaguely dystopian alternate reality film like Sin City over, for example, Harry Potter style fantasy, but it matters not.

If Batman counts, SC does, that's it. Still, nice to now be able to put LJ person to list person to real life face now.

My personal favorite is 2001 but I guessed that Bladerunner would win that pole. What do you think of other Philip K. Dickstories that have made it to the big screen like Minority Report, Total Recall & Next?
