Car Shopping and nervousness

I might go car shopping tonight. I'm slightly intimidated by it. I am most certainly not going to take my down-payment money with me. This will insure that I do not make an impulse descision. I need to test drive a few cars. Mull it over, then decide at home ( Read more... )

If you DO figure out how the costs figure out of upfront vs. gas, by all means let me know. I've been wondering that myself.

Be brave! You can do this :)

well, if you've been following the current news that between all the crap and OPEC enjoying money even more, oil prices are set to rise to around $100/barrel from the current ~73/75 a barrel. Which has you over one, of course.

For that reason, I would choose the Toyota. That difference in gas is looking to move to HUGE in the next two years, and has a very likely possibility of making 10k look like a drop in the tank, pardon the pun. :(

That's very interesting news and it will definately weigh on my descision.

Are you busy tomorrow evening? Want to come test driving with me?

Well, there certainly are many reasons to buy the Prius. Saving money on gas is definitely one of the top reasons. However, to offset the $10,000 price difference, you'd have to have the car for more than a few years to actually accrue the equivalent savings in fuel. Also, since the car is designed to generate as little waste in terms of heat, running the heater is actually not "green" as it requires the engine to run, even when it's not needed to drive the car.

That being said, all of the choices you have are good ones. However, with the tax credits and the high levels of SMUG that this car causes the driver to emit, I think the Prius would be a good investment. Plus, hybrids tend to come with a few toys that normal cars don't get.

Plus, it's the car you want.

True. However, here in Baltimore, the heater only needs to be used for about a month, maybe a month and a half, unless we're having a particularly cold winter.

Hopefully, since it's a brand new car, I should have it at least 5 to 7 years. The car I'm driving now, I've had for about 3.

I do really like the toys. :)

Aside from the increased cost, the one thing I don't like about the Prius is that horrible spoiler, which causes a craptastic blind spot. I may be able to get them to remove it, though...
