Sanctuary Background Information
HISTORY:
Montague John Druitt was born the second son of William Druitt, a physician in Wimborne Minster, Dorset in 1857. He attended Oxford where he studied the Classics, took part in debate (speaking mostly on topics of a political nature), and indulged in cricket. At some point during his time at Oxford, he became acquainted with and a part of a group called the Five. They were a group of (mostly) scientists dedicated to expanding their knowledge of the physical world, often by unorthodox means. An experiment with a rare sample of untainted vampire blood brought to the surface dormant abnormalities in each of the Five's genes. For John, it expanded the natural abnormalities for which he was being treated by Helen allowing him the ability to teleport and, essentially, driving him mad.
He managed to keep a tenuous grasp on his sanity for a time. In 1888, all pretense fell away when he was uncovered by Helen as the man responsible for the Ripper killings in Whitechapel. His whereabouts for the next century (or so) are unknown. The most likely event is that he continued his murderous spree until his arrival in Old City. John was never a bungling lunatic in the thrall of his madness. He proved clever, manipulative, and deceptive. He likely put his teleporting ability to good use, picking off a few here and there before moving on to another location to keep himself undetected. After his run-in with Helen, he was saved twice over by Tesla: spared first from death and then delivered (albeit incidentally) from madness by Nikola's torture. He returned once more to Old City to haggle with Ashley in order to protect Helen from the same suffering he'd faced at Tesla's hands. With his sanity restored, John's goal is to somehow atone for the evil he'd done in the century before and, perhaps, with time and effort, make right by Helen and their daughter.
PERSONALITY:
The first thing one would notice when dealing with John Druitt is his intensity. In contrast to that, he is measured, almost cautious in expressing himself. He chooses words and gestures with great, noticeable care. Having recovered from the nightmare of his madness, John is aware of how easily he could slip back into that darkness. Because of that, he endeavors to maintain his rigid control of himself. When properly prodded, his temper does flare as does his feelings of guilt and remorse.
He behaves as man fighting addiction. There are some small indications in the canon that the bloodlust he feels is like a powerful drug. He describes that feeling to Ashley and again when he explains to Watson that his actions in the past (the Ripper killings, specifically) were not his to control. He is clever at hiding himself, as evidenced by his closest friends and some of the most brilliant minds weren't able to detect that he was responsible for the Ripper killings. He expresses great regret for the violent acts he committed while he was insane and seems to have a genuine desire to make up for them, or at least to make up for betraying Helen and Watson.
Overall, John's hard to read, guarded, and measured. He still carries a great deal of love and affection for Helen, but is unable to express it as he did in the past. Perhaps he's afraid of being rejected by her (though he understands her mistrust) or perhaps it's that he no longer feels entitled after everything. It seems as though he wants nothing more than to have his old life back and to have his family with Helen and Ashley, but he realizes how utterly hopeless that dream is and contents himself with being near them and helping them when he can. One could say form John's behavior that he feels he is undeserving of happiness he had in the past and that it is his punishment. Beneath the exterior, John is passionate and driven. Rather than express these outwardly, John keeps them in check (for worry of regressing back into his killer ways?), coming across as aloof, intense, and some times a little on the (or a great deal) creepy side of things.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
John is an intelligent, intellectual man. As an Abnormality he poses the oh-so-famous killer instinct and his teleportation ability. He has a passing knowledge of the law from his experiences as a barrister and a deep knowledge of the Classics, which he studied and received honors in at Oxford.
APPEARANCE:
Tall, really tall. Like 193cm (6'4") tall. Bald. Not the sort you'd want to meet in a dark alley. He tends to dress nicely, showing a preference for dark colours and mildly old-fashioned styles (high waists, suspenders, crisp button-downs). The most modern aspect of his attire would be the leather duster (v. dramatic when fighting). Other distinguishing features include a noticeable scar from his upper lip to his nose and one across his cheek (presumably from when Helen shot him in 1888).

UNIVERSE:
The world of Sanctuary is a world that is different from our own, yet feels familiar. The creatures of myth and legend move secretly throughout the world, both threatening and threatened, while one woman and her team search them out. Together they track down, study and protect the strange and often terrifying creatures that secretly populate our world and live among us. Although dismissed as monstrous figments of our imaginations and the stuff of our childhood nightmares, Dr. Helen Magnus recognizes that the world is full of nature's mistakes and triumphs and has the spectacular proof that they are indeed real. Magnus and her colleagues run the Sanctuary, a covert, world-wide organization that seeks out non-human intelligent creatures, known as abnormals, and tries to help and learn from them, while also having to contain the more dangerous creatures. But they are not the only people aware of the existence of these abnormals and ot everyone shares their accepting views. Even among abnormals, there are those who believe that humans are the lesser species and resent living in the shadows.
