007 - someone up there hates this state

Sep 03, 2010 15:35

[Few things in life make Griffin truly upset. Economic problems and Ohio, mainly. Today, one of those problems seems to have taken a new step in making him extremely upset, as with recent football announcements. Now, Griffin loves football a lot, and even his calendar has a countdown to opening day (same with hockey, and you're going down, Anaheim) ( Read more... )

[He sniffs loudly, like he's just come out of a sobbing attack.]

You dare intrude on my moment of misery? You're very brave.

[He won't be a drama queen much longer. It's kind of like his time of the month, or something.]

U-University of M-Michigan... and Ohio.

[Oh god, he can't even bring himself to say it. The crocodile tears are coming up like geysers.]

T-two games! Not just one!

[ Meanwhile little miss competitive here is thinking someone hates her too. And it’s not about getting a tougher draw vs easier - it’s not just whining. Wisconsin’s biggest rivalries are Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern, probably in that order (though many might swap Michigan and Iowa). These are natural rivalries that interest her in in the larger sense - irrespective of the ebb & flows of win/loss records.

Given the addition of Nebraska, that looked to be an attractive match up for a variety of reasons as well. She got exactly none of those top 5 rivals in the same division. Even if Minnesota got the protected status in order to preserve the most played rivalry in D-I football, that’s it. One out of five - no other team lost that many rivalry games or even close to it. Minnesota although a tradition to go against? Is pretty damn sad to beat into the ground after a while. She is very disappointed and pouting majorly.

As it currently stands, Wisconsin will play Iowa and Michigan at Camp Randall only 2 times over the next ( ... )

[Then she of all people should know his pain, to an extent. It's almost like that situation in reverse, with him playing more games with the one team he never wants to play against in contrast to the once-a-year glorious moment. Not to mention, he likes dominating D-I anyway, since it's kind of amusing save for last year when Iowa nearly decapitated him. Otherwise, he doesn't mind everyone else, except MSU but that's kind of more like a fun time grilling with your neighbors than it is all-out warfare.]

Ohio, that's what. Ohio.

[Truly, that one name alone should explain all of his problems.]

[ She would know it, it's in reverse. To her? You have the greatest season of all time, it's legendary. She likes competition, it's no fun when you're just standing above them and kicking them in the ribs the entire time. (Much like she does to Sven since 2004.) There's a beauty in overcoming obstacles, and you bet that having so many rivalries she makes for that purpose.

She tilts her head to that. (Oh how familiar that might be, you should know who's city she is now.) ]

You don't have a game against them?

[Oh, he knew which state she belonged to. He can sense it. But he frowns, shaking his head mournfully like an old widower.]

No, I got two.

Me n' Ohio. Two games this year. No' one. Two.

[He even wipes at his eyes. Pretty much has the 'someone shot my dog' expression.]

Wait...

Is this football we're talking about?

[Well, excuse me for being an eleven time Stanley Cup winner. And what do you have? Hmmm? Especially being named after a Disney movie, for heaven's sakes.]

[ Kit is not sure how to feel about this whole thing except that it's clearly not right. The whole point of having the game is that it is the maker-or-breaker, the point where the winners are seperated from the losers, no second chances -- until next season, of course. Having two games kind of defeats that purpose. And even though two chances to win would be like an ego boost times 1.5, then there might always be the risk of losing twice (god forbid), or worse, a win and a lose. What kind of ultimate rivalry is supposed to end in a draw? That's just terrible. ]

So... you heard?

...Yeah.

[That's all very true. He lives for The Game, spending many a moment in his U of M hoodie with his 'BEAT OSU' bumper sticker and many other objects related to smashing Buckeyes and yay Go Blue! This is just an unspoken horror. This is pretty much the only reason they don't like each other in the first place!]
