The new European crisis

"If this is the answer, it is better to be alone than in bad company", said the Italian foreign minister Roberto Maroni. Indeed, the 25 thousand refugees who've arrived to the Italian shores since the beginning of the "Arab spring" (mostly Tunisians), are far from being the "human tsunami" and the Exodus of Biblical proportions which Rome is trying to depict.

Trust Berlusconi for calling for emergency at the least opportunity. Emergency is a good excuse to bypass the laws and until now, it turned out well for him.

Or it could mostly be a hysteria blown out of proportions for domestic, pre-election consumption (especially in France).

Probably true for someone who cannot hope to gain votes other than from the right or the far-right. It's all the more ridiculous that Tunisian immigration in France has never been a problem in terms of integration (same language and same values).

You know, what I enjoy about these posts of yours is that there's virtually no controversy. You present an issue, you give the details, show all sides of the question, narrate a good story, show the problems, maybe propose some options, and that's it. No partisanship => no ground for bickering, no place for silly nonsense and drama; people don't even comment but just read, say to themselves "OK that was interesting; I learned something today, next". Not good for a high comment count, but quantity =/= quality. So keep the work.

OK back to the neighboring shitstorm.

They should just do what we do in Oz; lock them all up indefinitely in a concentration camp either in the desert or on an inhospitable island thousands of kilometres offshore. In the end 95% of them will be shown to be genuine refugees and they'll have to let them in anyway, but at least they can look tough in times of crisis.

"Big influx of refugees due to wars? Public going mad? No problem, lock them up in a concentration camp and people will forget about them while you slowly release them into the population anyway!"

Of course, indefinite detention does have serious mental health impacts, so rather than having someone working in your country and contributing to society, you get to spend hundreds of thousands of Euros turning them into headcases before turning them loose in the community where they will be too broken to work and will require state assistance to survive for the rest of their lives.

Oh yeah, and don't forget, 7 year olds in prison is cool, OK!?
