Selfish Colbert Helped to Raise Money for Charity: The Monster

Dec 22, 2010 14:41

There is an article at NoFactZone by DB that needs to be read. The short of it is that Bill O'Reilly was piss off with Colbert because of
this. O'Reilly didnt waste time on attacking the poor while attempting to defend his willfully ignorant, borderline heretical, self justification of being a Christian Grinch during the Christmas Season.

Stephen Colbert and his loyal fans helped donate one and a half million dollars for charitable organizations

If you are singing Colbert's praises based on his own donations, please do so--
The donations of his fans are irrelevant to his character.
It is relatively easy to give other people's money to charity.

Ann Coulter opened that door by saying Colbert AND his fans dont donate or help others.

Colbert donated his own time, not just money, on helping our troops (many times on his show on Iraq and here on America where he welcomed the troops on the studio) and the YRF. He also gave time and voice to the US Olympic Team to their worries regarding the lack of help they needed to participate on the winter olympic games. Then there is also the fact that he also donated from his own pocket several times to charity organizations but mostly he donated his time and energy to make sure they got the helped and the voice they needed for their efforts. So Colbert is not all talk, he does the walk and that is the issue here.

Given the US government is a secular one and US culture is also removed from Christian obscurantism, who gives a shit who interprets the Bible rightly in this case? It changes nothing and serves mainly as Bread and Circuses for those who have a slightly more sophisticated concept of same.

"It changes nothing..."

I don't think that's right. Notwithstanding the secular government, there is a lot of cultural capital that gets leveraged in American when something gets presented as representing Christian teaching. The question of what in fact can or should be validly presented as Christian teaching is then a practical one, and we should be critical about the content of what gets so presented for this reason.

We are not the Roman Empire, we recognize no denomination as the official religion of these United States, and cultural tradition prohibits any attempt to do same. Hence my point stands. Who gives a shit?

I watched the clip of O'Reilly responding, my favourite part is when O'Reilly gets offended that Colbert didn't show adequate respect for Ben Franklin. Sacrilege! Sort of makes Colbert's point for him.
