Bollocks. There's plenty of criticism of President Obama that is not in fact racist. There's a difference between criticizing him for authorizing hits on US citizens and claiming that he's an illegal Kenyan Islamofascicommunazi here to defile our wimmins and pollute our precious bodily fluids for the Union of Soviet Muslim Sumerianlizardman National Socialist Republics of Greater Kenya.

There is nothing new or surprising about the rise of the fringe. The modern Right William Buckley created was a means of stitching together various movements of whom the rational ones managed to secure the co-operation of the fruitcakes but never actually did anything beyond rhetoric. Karl Rove managed to hold this together and even to do something unprecedented like keeping triennial control for six years despite the usual trend.

Then it was all buggered for the last 2 years of Bush's Administration, the old coalition is cracking up, and the fringes have no mainstream leaders to restrain them. Hence the shit hit the fan.
