The judge can convict them and the U.S. govt. will never cooperate. It at least sends a signal that Italy won't participate in the charming human rights violation tour that is foreign rendition.

A question-if the CIA cannot rendition terrorists, what about Israel and ex-Nazi genociders?

If caught, the Mossad operatives involved faced jailtime. The difference is Mossad generally wasn't caught.

It's symbolic. Of course the CIA agents kidnapped the Egyptian on Italian soil, but there's no way anyone can make the US hand them over. Now, if they had "invited" the Egyptian to visit a US base in Italy (which is technically US territory), and had kidnapped him in the yard of the US base and then tortured him, there'd be nothing to discuss - would've been a completely US issue. Now it's an international issue. The US has bilateral agreements with most European countries (and many others) for extradition of US citizens who commit crimes on foreign soil. Moreover, Berlusconi was/is a close US ally, so that adds another reason why this will never be enforced ( ... )

Absolutely. Why would they not be able to? Because they're American?

I just wondering if this was done regularly under international law, that's all. I'm not an expert on the subject.
