If Europeans remain as concerned about illiberal and autocratic politics within Europe as they were with Milosevic in the 1990s, I daresay that these two really probably will do more damage to the EU than the British did. Here US influence can't 'help' by offering further fruit of the poisoned tree, if Europeans as a whole have learned anything from 20th Century misadventures with dictatorships, these are the times to show it. France has already taken steps that would be cause for great alarm with the USA and should be with another nuclear-armed state as well.

So they're blaming the EU for a loss of identity and sovereignty to Eurocrats, the inability to control their borders, and German domination over EU monetary policy. Their politicians claim credit for every benefit the EU provides as if they provided it themselves.

It certainly does sound like their political culture has successfully integrated into the EU.

I give this to the lack of democratic tradition in East European countries like Hungary and Poland. They aren't culturally used to having a free society, hence this proneness to swing into dangerously authoritarian directions. They see a strong-man like Putin, and they think they could emulate him.

If they think they can trigger a complete transformation of European values, they're mistaken.
