185 CEOs of the largest US companies have petitioned the major EU leaders to oppose a Brussels decision that Apple should pay well over 14 billion euro of taxes to Ireland, after having used tax-evading techniques. In any normal analysis this would be the main reason that the powers which own the press were pushing for Brexit: an off-shore tax-haven with single-market access. So Soft Brexit it is then.

You know what's even funnier? That the tax money these companies went to hide in Europe in the first place could've come to you, in the form of public services - but it hasn't. Funny, right? Ha ha.

I can actually see why they'd be concerned. While there is absolutely no reason to feel sorry for Apple here, they were following Irish tax laws as both they understood it and as the Irish government understood it. Not only did Ireland say that Apple followed the law, they are thinking about appealing and forgoing the 13 billion in tax revenue. Even the EU didn't say that Apple did anything wrong, rather for Ireland's anti-competitive activities, Apple will need to pay Ireland a huge amount of money ( ... )
