Truce, schmruce

Whoever really believed the armistice that Lavrov and Kerry achieved for Syria a few days ago, was going to last, must have not paid any attention at all.

Not only was that cease-fire not respected by either Assad's forces or the so called "moderate rebels" (not to mention Daesh), but it was being actively violated in the very first hours after the ( Read more... )

This reminds me of that incident in Afghanistan, where US planes took the bonfires of some Canadians on the ground for anti-plane fire, and "fired back", killing 5 Canadian troops. There was an "investigation pending" back then as well, and also some muted apologies. Oh, and some "à la guerre comme à la guerre" sort of apologism, of course.

That's not how you keep a ceasefire.

I'd say 60% incompetence and 40% not giving much of a fuck who they're bombing from a safe distance.

Well, Russian planes hit a UN convoy bringing humanitarian aid to those in need. What can I say.

It seems like the truce never stood a chance. Even Mr. Kerry introduced it by saying This is the best thing we could think of. The worst part is, he's probably right.

Killing a few dozen Syrian troops was kinda stupid, even if it was an accident. Maybe killing a few thousand would work towards ending the war, maybe stopping the bombing would help as well, although I doubt there's anything the US could do that doesn't involve killing a few thousand Syrian troops would make any difference at this point. That said, If the US stopped bombing, it would prevent articles about the US killing a few dozen Syrian troops. This is very different from a truce, but it is something.

Yeah. Those pesky bloggers around the world, blogging about events happening around the world. Life would've been so much more tranquil if people just stopped paying attention.

Naw, wasn't directing this at bloggers, really pointing out that the US bombing is pretty much a non-factor at this point... and why the hell are we involved in Syria if we're a non-factor?
