That's stupid.

Camera doesn't give much useful information about what's happening and there's no easy way to shut down a microphone, which does give it.

Also, your PC has to be compromised fully to let the bad guys get the video from your cam, and if it's so -- they already have almost all the valuable information, getting a video doesn't add much to it.

I don't have a smartphone, or a laptop (that I've turned on in the last two or three years at least). I do have a webcam, that's been unplugged pretty much since the first week I got it. If they - whoever 'they' are - can somehow make it wiggle out of the box and over to the computer to plug itself in - I guess they've earned the right to watch.
