1) Everyone likes compliments - everyone would rather be seen as a competitor instead of an enemy - if it's that simple, Vlady leaning Trump makes sense.

2) People vote with their wallets. Since the Russians can't technically vote, they'll just support and hack with their wallets?

3) Bill was buddies with Boris, Vlady and Boris had a falling out (oversimplifying a little here), so Vlady might be weary of another Clinton?. As the saying goes - the pretend wife of the pretend friend of the guy who gave me my job but I distanced myself from might not be my pretend friend.

Ah, those Russian hackers! The Assanges and Snowdons of the epoch. The Fancy Bears now claim to have hacked into WADA's database, and they have some pretty damning revelations about the Williams sisters. Seems like the world tennis organisation had allowed them to get several particular brands of dope. Hmmm, this is about to grow into a huge scandal if proven true... (source)

No real surprise here, Russia obviously gains more from someone who wants to disband NATO and much of the American Empire than someone who wishes to maintain it. It's literally geopolitics 101, encourage your enemies to weaken themselves.
