Why does this guy even bother?

I mean, the only one who could benefit from the attention is Ken Ham and nobody else. And his horde of Creationist drones. Why provide him with the validation that he so much desires? The Nye/Ham debate wasn't supposed to be "won" by anyone - Ham lured Nye into it, in order to bring himself into the spotlight. And Nye obliged. Why?

Absolutely. This sort of openness to embracing debate with something like creationism that is inherently incapable and unwilling to have a genuine debate, gives pseudoscience a scientific legitimacy that it isn't entitled to. Everyone may be entitled to their beliefs and opinions - yes, but that doesn't mean every belief or opinion is just as valid, or warrants being taken just as seriously as the next one.

The real beneficiaries of this are fence-sitters, folks who have never really given it much thought. By highlighting just what's going on there, people like Nye can show that there is an alternative viewpoint to folks who may never have been exposed to it. (It also can help bring more attention to what ought to be an illegal perversion of tax laws. Light is, after all, the best disinfectant.)
