The ol' American tradition of autocracy going back to sedition acts, the anti-abolition gag orders, and pogroms and lynchings. In much of the USA democracy remains an idea worth trying.
We've had a similar scandal down here in BG, albeit at a much smaller scale. See, we've been trying to uproot corruption from our top ranks for decades, and we've been pretending to be doing "reform" for some time now. So, our ruling "reformists" (one party in the ruling coalition is actually literally called the Reformist Bloc) initiated some changes in the Constitution that would refurbish our judicial system. Only, in the last moment the prime minister's dominant party turned to the 180' and decided to backpedal on one of the most important aspects of the judicial reform, the one that would grant the Supreme Court almost autonomy and make it independent from both the legislative and executive power (which is exactly how things are meant to be). So it won't be completely independent now, and the parliament (and whichever parties are dominant there at the time) will be able to appoint the top prosecutors in the state
