The fact that China is building stuff hectically is hardly news to anyone. But here we won't be talking of skyscrapers in the crowded megapolises, but artificial islands in the hotly contested South China Sea.

Something I haven't been able to see in the linked articles is exactly where these artificial islands are located. The best I can find is a reference to them being "an island made by China some 600 miles from its coastline". Which is way outside their zone....

Damn sure the might makes right principle would apply. It has always applied. China hasn't invented it, and neither has the US. Whoever has the means and resources to project power, will be tempted to do so. At least the one good thing in the whole situation is that the masks have fallen, and everyone knows who's who and what they want.
